Road Food: Helen's Sausage House

I don't plan travel around food, and I'm not a foodie, but if it is along the way, why not stop.  I read about Helen's Sausage House online while doing research for a trip to Delaware.  The reviews said if you were traveling near Smyrna you have to make the stop.  I agree.  Although you can't tell by the pictures, there was a non-stop line inside this place that opens at 4:00 a.m. each day except Sunday.  For less than $4 you get two sausage on a roll.  That's it!   It's worth it the stop and I recommend going if you are in the area.  Make no mistake, this is road food, but very good road food!

Helen's is the kind of place where even the locals eat.  Frankly, there were a lot of locals and I saw plates from a lot of other states. This is not a place built or established for tourists, but one of those places that gained popularity by being good.

  1. Looks like it should be on "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives."

  2. Deej, I found it on my iPhone app "Best Road Trip Ever." Nothing fancy about this place, to be sure, but the line to get a sausage spoke for itself. The menu was simple and inexpensive, plus I could mark "Been There" on my app. If you get to Delaware, you gotta stop here. It closes at noon each day.

  3. I see in your pic there were a couple bikes out front. This looks like a typical biker breakfast stop. Good food, cheap, and quick!

    1. There was a little bit of everyone there. As we were leaving there was a group of middle aged couples on bike stopping off on their way to Pennsylvania; maybe 20 people. It was non-stop at this place. Frankly, it beat the fast food scene one usually goes to (nothing wrong with the occasional McDonalds as far as I'm concerned, and these places always make good memories for me and my kids. I will seek out more places like this to stop at along the way, wherever it may be.
